Mmmm....
While
Manchester is well-known for its Chinese food - it's considered
the centre of the North by many - Sheffield has never had much of
a name for its Eastern cuisine.
Which
is a shame.
Sheffield
has several excellent Chinese restaurants. But, with more consideration
than our Mancunian friends, they are spread over the city, so you're
nearly always within calling distance of one.
The
Bull and I decided that a spot of lunchtime dim sum was in order,
and so we found ourselves at the Golden Dragon on Matilda Street.
(For
those of you who haven't come across it before, dim sum is the Chinese
equivalent of afternoon tea - lots of small, usually savoury, dishes.
Very dainty, and perfect for lunchtime.)

in her tum! |
It's
an old-style Chinese restaurant. The walls are covered in red paint
and golden dragons, the tables set out immaculately.
We
ordered our food, and sipped jasmine tea while we waited.
It
came quickly, and was lovely.
The
king prawn cheung fun (wide noodles stuffed with king prawns and
spring onions) were delectable.
The
lo pak ko (fried turnip paste - yes, I know it sounds horrid, but
believe me, it's one of the most heavenly things on earth) was fresh
and deliciously crispy on the outside.
Our
char siu buns (little buns stuffed with roast pork) were a little
disappointing - we suspect they weren't made with lard as they should
be - but only in comparison with the other dishes.
We
also ordered a portion of Singapore-style curried noodles. The portion
was really generous, and was piled high with chicken, prawns and
vegetables. Really yummy!
The
service was quick and efficient, though a little reserved. We thought
that, given the quality of the meal, it was extremely good value.
We
also thought that it was better than the dim sum we'd had in a famous
(and dear) restaurant in Manchester a year or so ago.
We
hope to return in the evening soon.
Andrew - Birley, Sheffield I have known this restaurant since I was a wee lad. My grand parents used to do music functions for the place and thus family parties inevitably end up here once a year.
I personally tend to keep it for birthdays and special occasions.
This chinese has fair menu - the set menu's for 2-6 offer the best value for money by a long stretch. Whenever I've eaten here I always think we haven't ordered enough... and then course after course arrives until you waddle out!
The crispy duck here is always as good as it gets, the presentation and how it is served to you with chopsticks is a delight. The dim sum is particularly good also.
If you're a fan of 'sauces' there are plenty to choose from - in my opinion though these are where the GD just misses being truly special. They can be a little MSG heavy and over powering... slightly too salty or too sweet; the meat/fish content is usually good though.
Overall I like the place otherwise I wouldn't go back - and if I have the choice I pick here over Candytown. Definitley better for big groups where you try lots of stuff - they do the carousel well!
Good mid ranged restaurant with ok prices and friendly service. 4 out of 5
emma peters me and my husband always come here on special occasions the food is fantastic.the chicken in peking sauce is the best tasting dish on the menu (my opinion.)it good value for money 2 starters and 2 main meals come to around £25-£30 good enough for us.
Purple Monster Dim Sum at the Golden Dragon has been our favourite Sunday lunch for years, and, with very few exceptions, used to be of the same high quality standard (cheung fun rice rolls at one time were too much bland rice roll and not really enough exciting filling, but that was only a temporary 'lapse'! However, the Golden Dragon has recently had a change of management - and the first thing the new manager did was to get rid of the trolley service! An interesting difference in perspectives: what was merely a way of serving food to the management, is part of a special experience to the customers - hence there was so much customer protest that the trolleys came back quite quickly. This shows a positive side: the management is obviously keen to listen to cutomers' wishes.
The menu has changed - there are some interesting new dishes on it now (for example several styles of chicken feet - there used to be only one). On the other hand, some beloved familiars have dropped off the menu - e.g. steamed baby squid or fried sticky rice. We keep asking for them, hoping that eventually they might come back...
Prices are reasonable, with one exception: a few weeks ago, we had a portion of crackling belly pork with fresh pickled vegetables, which turned out to be £10 - a bit of a shock, since most dishes are roughly between £2.20 and £3.50.
All in all, we can still recommend the Golden Dragon and are happy to take friends and family there. But we still haven't managed to go there for an evening meal: the Dim Sum always seems to win!
