Purr!
What better way to spend an afternoon than in a lovely pub, drinking
lovely beer and eating lovely food?
Well,
the Bull seemed to think that a cinema trip was in order, though
frankly next time I'd rather stay in the pub.
The
Devonshire Cat has received many accolades for its beer and food,
so naturally the Greedy Twosome felt they were obliged to check
it out. Ack! The responsibilities of my job!
Anyway,
we trotted along one Saturday lunchtime after an abortive attempt
to have dinner there one night (they stop serving food FAR TOO EARLY...),
sat ourselves down and prepared to enjoy.
It's
a clever thing they've done at the Cat. The pub is bright, airy
and clean. But the beer is grand. They've taken the best parts of
new-style chain pubs and trad-style Real Ale Houses and created
a winner.
The
Bull was a little suspicious at first. He likes shabby pubs, as
do I. But I took to the Devonshire Cat like a duck to water. A pint
or two of Fat Cat beer went down a treat.
The
Bull had pie and chips. He said it was nice, though it was supposed
to be steak and ale pie and the ale wasn't really there. Which surprised
me, given the setting.
I had
a ham and cheese platter. To be honest, the ham was a bit wet and
lifeless, and the cheese was bland. But it was presented nicely.
I'd just advise the chef to source a more mature farmhouse cheddar
and a better cut of ham.
Our
friend had the bangers and mash. He seemed to enjoy them - there
wasn't much left after five minutes.
I'll
be back at the Cat, I don't doubt. But I would ask them to consider
extending their meal times in the evening. 8pm is really early for
this Greedy Cow - surely another hour or two wouldn't hurt...
Barry Pseudonym This place used to be pretty much the best in Sheffield for pub grub, but man alive, it's dropped its standards recently. Still much better than most places, but I long for the heady days of...er, about a year ago, when the pie was amazing instead of just 'good'. Great selection of beer though.
Alex Excellent and enormous selection of beers and ciders from around the world.
The food used to be good, but in the last 6 months it has declined and been the same old boring menu for months. The specials are good when they do them... they had a nacho chili dish once... it was the best.
The quality of the food is good - they just need more of it. Such little choice is frustrating when you know they can do it!
Shorty Greedy Cow may have been impressed in May 2002 but things have certainly changed. The last two occasions I have been there were notable for the mess of empty glasses, plates, crisp packets on many of the tables
Nick Hayne Having perused the Greedy Cows listings and not seen my beloved Cat show up, I sent an email. Only then did my folly become clear! However, I'd advise the Cow to make a second trip to the Cat, since I can tell merely from the food eaten there that it was a long time since, and they've not only changed chefs but taken on quite a few new staff. Menus now change monthly (try the shark steak thats on this month - thats june), but the classic beer setup remains resolutely perfect. You can normally find me lurking somewhere there with a pint of absolution, and if you ask nicely I'll play a game of chess and tutor you in the way of real ales! It's not a cheap pub by student standards, but it's damnwell worth a visit. 08/06/05
Neil Good food, huge selection of beers!
They actually have a menu for the beers and include brews from all around the world.
Food wise, they have a standard menu of burgers and sandwiches and the like but also have a specials board which changes regularly.
We used to eat here regularly at lunch times but less now because the prices have gone up too much. Mains used to be around 4.50 but are now more like 6.25... (Feb 05)which is quite a lot for a weekly lunchtime meal. A chip butty is 2.50... Food quality has always been good though, and you normally get rather large portions so won't go home hungry.
If you're interested in trying some different beers then go along, if you're hungry and are feeling flush then get some food too!

David Campbell I took a couple of business contacts from london tto the DC on a Tuesday lunchtime. Yes it was abit quiet (so we could hear ourselves talk and there was no smoke drifting around) and the food, and beer, was excellent. We stuck to burgers - but they were damm fine burgers - and chips of course!
Roddy We've eaten at the Devonshire Cat quite often and never been disappointed. One ham and cheese ploughman's is enough to feed a family of four and seemed to be made from genuine ham and cheese rather than supermarket plastic stuff. I also fondly remember a pitta stuffed with roast veggies, feta cheese and couscous which was out of this world. Add on the excellent beer available and you can't go wrong.
Hannah This was seriously disappointing. We were looking for a 'traditional' Sunday lunch somewhere in the town centre. The food was cheap, but that was about all that was going for Sunday lunch at the Devonshire Cat. The pub was almost empty at quarter past one, which should have warned us... It isn’t that the food was actively bad, it was just nothing special, and a long, long way from the promises of the menu (all about lovingly prepared, locally sourced food). But the service was awful: surly, slow and just miserable. The waitress didn’t seem to know which meal was going to which table, and a good ten minutes elapsed between the first two meals for our table of four arriving, and the second two. Oh, and they'd run out of lots of things by 1.30, including three of the main courses, coffee and dessert. Amazing considering that there were only about 20 people in the place.
Paul Rodgerson Typical 'Townie' pub grub. But then that's not what you'd want to go to the Devonshire Cat for is it? Ignore the food menu, stick to the beer menu and you won't go far wrong.
