What's
the grub like, then?
The main selling point of this place is the carvery which offers
a substantial plate of meat and two veg with all the trimmings,
but the only problem is that while this is all very nice and good
value for money it seems that someone forgot the rest of the menu
along the way.
As
it was a weeknight when we popped along here I decided (quite foolishly
in retrospect) that I fancied something other than the heavy duty
carvery and ordered a plate of scampi and chips instead along with
a starter of breaded mushrooms for myself and my partner to share.
When
I ordered the starter I was fully aware that we'd probably not end
up with much for our money, but when six tiny mushrooms sitting
atop a bed of bland and unseasoned salad (i.e. leuttice laeves)
arrived for £1.95, I was a less than impressed.
This
was followed by a motley collection of items that passed for my
main course including soggy scampi that disintegrated upon contact
with the fork, peas as hard as iron and chips that had come straight
out of a freezer.
My
other half assures me that her fish and chips were fine, but I was
a little concerned by the fact that the fish appeared to be less
than half a centimetre thick.
This
was topped off by a pudding of rhubard and apple crumble with custard
that could have been made out of wood-pulp for all the taste that
it had.
What
did you drink?
Murphys, as this was the only stout they had (and I've had far better
pints elsewhere as well).
What's
the crowd like?
The other diners were a mix of couples and families with a few larger
parties thrown in out for a special occasion.
And
the vibe?
The restaurant is quite crowded and noisy, but this makes for a
pleasant atmosphere and helps to distract your attention from the
food.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
If you pop along here for a meal then you're best sticking to the
carvery. If you're a vegetarian or just not in the mood for large
quantities of meat and gravy then you're probably better off trying
somewhere else altogether.
Value
for money?
A meal for five including three rounds of drinks from the bar cane
to just under seventy quid. Which would have been fine had it not
been for the fact that the majority of the dishes that we ordered
were flagrantly overpriced. Oh, and the waitress that served us
seemed to be thrown by the request for an itemised bill.

Valerie Have been here many times and always have the carvery which is excellent and real value for money. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to oblige.
David and Christine All we can say is that the carvery is the most fantastic quality and value of all the many places we have eaten in up and down the country.
Emma The carvery is nice and a bargain. Loads and loads of veg!!!! on a sunday tho it does tend to get full of people taking their grandparents!!! otherwise great
sharon i agree that the carvery is the best ive ever had but unfortunatly someone in our party wanted something different and there was nothuing to offerbut yet again were going for sunday tea tonight so will let you know what we thought on a sunday as always been though the week, sharon from crookes sheffield
ali I go every night for a pint and wouldn't miss it for the world. Nice people and atmosphere - piy they stopped doing pub grub.
Bruce I went on first night of reopening, It had been open 20 minutes when my wife and I arrived. The food was over cooked and cold, the service was non existant. I pity anybody that arrived after us. We had used The Crosspool many times prior to this visit but this was our last.
Alan Crosspool Tavern offers the best carvery in Sheffield. Always 3 meats to choose from, Gammon , Turkey and Beef, excellent range of vegetables. On weekdays in the daytime the carvery is only £3- cheaper than a Mcdonalds for a beautiful traditional british roast! TRY IT!!!
Vicki Excellent food, would choose this over many restaurants in sheffied. Excellent value for money especially weeknights when you can add a starter and dessert for only £1. Would definately recommend this for anyone wanting good homecooked roast dinners!
Heather Went there today (saturday) for my lunch, we all had carvery, no puddings or starters, and with drinks came to a whopping £15 for 3 of us!!! Bargin. I thought the carvery was really nice, for once really nice home made roast potatoes, and meat that wasn't cooked to a crisp. Would definatly go again, only thing to let it down was only one girl serving all tables (little slow).
emma I thnk the crosspool tavern does great food but i agree with everything else that has been put. It deserves to be a 2 star.
Jonnie I have to agree with Matt. The place is stuck in the Toby Inn 1970's. Rubbish food, rubbish service, rubbish decor. The last time the wife and I went (family do - no choice) we vowed never to go ever again, even if it only to avoid the garish hand made posters that were blu-tacked seemingly to every available wall surface. Summary - Rubbish.
