Now, I’m quite a fan of this trendy French-style bistro/café chain. But, as a reader has also said, I do find the quality patchy from place to place.

I also think it’s quite pricey for what you get, especially when the portions are, as I find them in the Ecclesall Road branch, rather small.

I had a goats cheese salad, which was nice, but really more of a snack than a main course, and for the price I felt that I was hard done by. I mentioned this to the waiter, who seemed to think I’d made a funny joke - I didn’t think it was funny leaving a restaurant hungry, but there you go…

I can think of three Café Rouges which are better than the Sheffield one. The portion size surprised me, because in Yorkshire one tends to get more generous helpings than elsewhere. I wonder whether therefore Café Rouge thinks it’s being more urbane and trendy by having teensy helpings.

If this is the case, sirs, you are mistaken.

The next time I fancied a posh salad, I made one at home - it was twice the size and half the price. Sorted.

do not rate this place at all - totally standard food - might as well be out of a microwave but they charge you £30 because it's cafe rouge - v poor

I thought it was great, food fab and portions were good size as im not a large eater and the staff were really nice would certainly go back

I used to love this place but it has become very disappointing. I think the service is generally poor and food can take ages even when there are only a few people in the restaurant. It's still a nice place to share a bottle of wine, olives and bread but I wouldn't bother with a full meal there now.

Have eaten there twice. Both times we really felt we weren't in a chain restaurant due to the service and food, in fact the food was excellent, far supassing expectations on both visits although I can sympathise with the portion size complaint which was an issue on my 2nd visit. The atmosphere and decor is also good which you can't always take for granted in Sheffield. Recommended

Went rcently and found it to be over priced, poor food and service. The staff did not seem to care. Won't be going back.

We went mob handed, about 15 of us, and they were great in the restaurant. i envy the seafood fans with bloody great dishes of mussels, looked amazing. my beouf bourgignon was wonderful, as well as the marquise au chocolat for dessert. everyone there had a great time, would reccomend to any large groups for a very very good night out. 08/06/05

Have only ever eaten there once in the evening (which was very good I thought) but we usually go for breakfast on a Sunday. It's never too busy, you can spend as long as you like reading the papers and having another cup of coffee. And they do a perfect poached egg every time.

Food was great, and service was with a big smile. Everyone left the resturant satisfied especially those who had sampled the house speciality mussels. Watch out for the 10% service charge on groups over 8.

We were very dissapointed with this place. The service was OK. The food is terrible and costly. We had a pasta dish with asparagus and courgette etc. It seemed like a childs portion and was devoid of any asparagus at all, the courgette was almost non existent and so fine I'm sure it was a bit of chopped parsley. This cost us £32 for a very light lunch (including 2 children under the age of 4) We certainly will not go again. It was nothing that I couldn't have done at home by opening a few tins!!

Your review is spot on. If only I'd read it before I went. I too ordered a goats cheese salad and was rewarded with tiny titbits of cheese on toast on a few salad leaves. To add insult to injury I'd had a pate starter which arrived with nowhere near enough bread for the pate. So I'd had to order a side order of bread. You'd think that a waiter would warn you that your meal is mainly going to consist of bread. It's a shame 'cos some of the dishes are nice. Like the vegetarian tartlets...

Toby Wilson writes:
When is a chain not a chain? When you have a diabolical meal in the 'flagship' restaurant in Manchester, and have had several excellent meals in the Sheffield branch. Good service, excellent salads, good wine. Enough said.
