What's
your name?
Stirk Bogarde
Where
is it?
The Blue Moon Cafe
2, St. James St
Sheffield
S1 2EW
What's
the number? 0114
276 3443
What's
the grub like, then?
I've been a vegetarian for going on 20 years
but am often disappointed with purely veggie
establishments.
The Blue Moon is very definitely an exception. I've been there several
times and the food has always been excellent. E.g. they do great
aubergine stews - this is one of my fave vegetables but one I find
difficult to cook; they have it just right. The carrot cake is also
pretty damn fine.
If
I have one gripe it's that the hot food usually
isn't very - I think that's just enough for me to
deduct a Moo. Though I suppose you can see their point - if you
keep food hot for too long it can turn into tasteless mush, or get
carbonised.
What
did you drink?
Cafetiere coffee - fine.
Various bottled lagers etc which tend to be both
vegan and organic - also fine.
What's
the crowd like?
Shoppers, families, groups of friends,
cyclists, arty types.
And
the vibe?
Fine - it's usually quite busy even when I've
been at off peak times (seems to have fairly
long opening hours).
Anything
else you'd like to say?
Definitely my first choice for a quick meal, or coffee & cake,
in the city centre.
Value
for money?
Main courses around a fiver including a
generous (non-optional!) salad. That's
reasonable.
Drinks,
esp. alcoholic ones, maybe a bit pricey.
What's
your name? Debbie
What's
the grub like, then?
Lovely. Interesting and filling veggie and vegan stuff. Carnivorous
husband did not complain. Big choice of hot and cold dishes and
snacks/cakes/coffees. Self-service, but quick despite being very
busy.
What
did you drink?
Husband had an organic beer (very nice, he said). I had apple juice.
What's
the crowd like?
Mixed - business folk, mums & babies, friends with shopping.
And
the vibe?
Lively. Very nice place to take a baby/toddler to. Lots of highchairs.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
Definitely going again.
Value
for money? Very good value. For two adults and a toddler, less than £10.

Jennifer I love thisplace - there's a really nice atmosphere in there and always a nice choice of food and outstanding cakes (the vegan choc cake and the carrot cake deserve a mention). I do agree that it would be nice to have a choice other than salad though - although I've never had to pay for it if I didn't want it, I think they do charge a bit less if you go saladless. I also love the art on the walls which is never the same twice...
Kate What a disappointment! The food was tasteless and over rated. The bread was stale and hard. Not recommended!
Laura The ambience and unusual food is really great here and I love the clocks - they have four for all the regions in South Yorks! The dark chocolate cake is homemade and absolutely delicious, and even if you're not a veggie, like me, the food is still yummy. The individuality of the cafe is really noteable too, when, nice as they are, we're surrounded by costas and starbucks.
Mat I was always a Blue Moon stalwart before they moved to the new premesis. The old were cramped and tucked away, but the atmosphere seems to have been lost in the changes. While the food and the service is still good, it's bizzarly harder to get a table now than it was in the old place! Plus there seems to have been an increase in hostile starers as regular customers...you know, the folks that look at you as if you're commiting a faux pas by sitting at the next table. Oh for the days of the little old cafe!
Jo Absolutely adore the Blue Moon. The menu is varied (I love that 'V' stands for vegan - no problems for veggies) and the staff are always friendly. A must.
Angela Bowler They are on the right lines at the Blue Moon but the chairs are uncomfortable for a long lunch.
Susan The best thing about the Blue Moon is its chilled out ambiance. It's a great place to go on a Saturday afternoon to take a break from shopping and read the papers. But they make the same mistake of many vegetarian cafes: summer or winter, you have to have salad with everything. On the rare occasion they have rice (generally on Wednesday when they do a decent curry), they don't let you have it as an alternative with any other dish. And if you don't want salad at all with your main dish, you still have to pay for it. A staff member once told me that they deliberately give their food a subtle taste - curry excepted - because people don't like strong flavours. I don't know about you, but what's the point in having yellow fat (aka cheese) if you can't even taste it? I'm sure it's all very healthy but it's time vegetarian cafes moved on. Don't be afraid of flavour Blue Moon, it just wants to be your friend. Think about presentation and up your customer service. You've a lot going for you.
