How Battersea's miraculous grapefruit tree was saved

London Latest

Available for over a year

As you walk down Queenstown Road in Battersea you might notice a bit of foliage that looks slightly out of place. It's grapefruit tree that was brought from Grenada to south-west London as a sapling in the 1980s by one of the street's residents, Marline Anderson. It's thought to be the only one of its kind in the UK growing outside of Kew Gardens. Marlene recently passed away and her neighbours have won a campaign to get a council preservation order to make sure it is never cut down.
