The US TikTok Ban

5 Questions On

Available for over a year

TikTok is hugely popular in the US, but Senators have voted to ban the app. In this episode of our 5 Questions On podcast, the BBC's Senior Technology Reporter, Chris Vallance looks at what the ban means, who is supporting it, and how it might work in practice. US lawmakers say ByteDance, which owns TikTok, is a Chinese company, something the platform denies. Concerns have been raised about the security of users' data, and allegations that it might be shared with the government in Beijing. TikTok insists it would not provide foreign user data to the Chinese government and is calling the new legislation an affront to the US right to free speech. Image: Getty
