Euro Referendum 75

The Reunion

Available for over a year

The 1975 European referendum turned out to be one of the most important events in post-war British politics, with (perhaps) plenty of lessons along the way for today’s politicians. We reunite the major protagonists from both sides of the divide of almost thirty years ago. From Harold Wilson's cabinet - Tony Benn – Labour’s Industry Secretary at the time, and a passionate anti campaigner. Shirley Williams – now Baroness Williams - then the Labour Government’s Secretary of State for Prices, and a strong supporter of the ‘Yes’ vote. The National Agent for the No camp was John Mills – then as now a Labour councillor. Tom Spencer – who went on to be a Conservative MEP – and who was a leading light in the “Yes” group “Britain in Europe”. Observing it all was John Cole, at the time the Deputy Editor of the Guardian. Produced by Louise Adamson Series Producer: David Prest The Reunion is a Whistledown Production for BBC Radio 4
