Record Migration - Necessity or Problem?

UK net migration - the difference between the number of people who enter the country and the number who leave - reached a record level last year. A total of 606,000 people were added to the population. The numbers were boosted by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of international students and skilled workers, including more than 200,000 nurses and carers. Immigration can be a contentious and for some a polarising issue. Many think it brings benefits but others worry about the pressures on homes, schools and GP waiting lists. So what do the figures tell us - and how is the debate on migration likely to unfold?
