But he went on to win with 73% of the vote, promising to fight corruption and bring peace in the east of the country. Now, President Volodymyr Zelensky - a comedian who had no experience of politics when elected less than three years ago - has suddenly emerged as a convincing war leader. His defiant addresses and video selfies have rallied the nation and given voice to Ukrainian anger. His story is extraordinary. The BBC's Jonah Fisher knows Ukraine well - he was a correspondent there for four years. He met and interviewed Volodymyr Zelensky numerous times and watched this unlikely rise unfold first-hand.
