Cantus in Memoriam

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Pärt was a great admirer of Benjamin Britten and was shocked when Britten died aged 63 in 1976: less than a year later this piece received its premiere. The music is like a slow cascade of tears, with strings from their highest note to the double bass's lowest 'weeping' for Britten's death. At the end we hear .... a distant bell. Composer: Arvo Pärt Performer: BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Robert Spano Recording date: 29 January 2020 Date of broadcast: 03 March 2020
