Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op 43

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Premiered in 1902, it was this symphony which consolidated Sibelius’ reputation in Finland and abroad. There is undoubtedly a struggle here, ‘a confession of the soul’ as Sibelius would later describe it. The music is terse and fragmentary. It is only in the final movement that the earlier themes move toward a triumphant conclusion. Composer: Jean Sibelius Performers: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: John Storgårds Recording date: 08 June 2013 Date of broadcast: 21 October 2014
