Viola Sonata, Op 147

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata was his last work and was composed in 1975. It has a dark and uncertain tone, through an atonal opening movement and a sprightly scherzo-like second movement. Shostakovich knew he was dying in 1975 (and did so within 3 months of the sonata’s completion), which lends the work an added sense of resignation. Composer: Dmitri Shostakovich Performer: Lise Berthaud (Viola) Performer: Adam Laloum (Piano) Recording date: 20 October 2014 Date of broadcast: 20 October 2014
