Blazing brass fanfares, and a pulsating tune, this is Shostakovich with the shackles off, showing us his lighter side. Written a year after Stalin’s death it combines the grandeur of a state occasion with the carefree attitude of youth. The overture was used in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Composer: Dmitri Shostakovich Performers: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: Yan Pascal Tortelier Recording date: 14 February 1998 Date of broadcast: 14 October 1998
