Wanting to compose something to exploit the lyricism and dramatic characterisation in Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau’s voice, Britten set Blake’s vivid and visionary poetry. The cycle is intense, chromatic and dark. The highlight is A Poison Tree, a feast of malevolence and chilling evil.
