Sixty years ago, the American secretary of state, General George C Marshall, unveiled a huge rescue plan for a Europe devastated by the Second World War. As well as financial destruction, Europe was also in a moral collapse - could Stalin's Russia offer an alternative ideology - and economic recovery that could combat Germany's financial woes?
