This week, Sarah Walker’s playlist takes its inspiration from the height of summer, from birdsong and balmy evenings to village greens and folk festivals. There’s a new release from the Moravian-born Classical composer Paul Wranitzky, Peter Warlock’s Serenade for Strings, and Webern’s richly atmospheric Im Sommerwind. Sarah also pauses for this week’s Choral Reflection with Thomas Tallis’s Tunes for Archbishop Parker’s Psalter, before exploring how composers from Vaughan Williams and Janáček to Kathryn Tickell have drawn inspiration from traditional folk music. And for the morning’s chance to put down the to-do list and settle in for something a little longer, Sarah turns to Vasily Kalinnikov’s Second Symphony – a richly melodic work that deserves to be heard far more often. A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3.
