5000 years ago the sea was a lot further away than it is today. The Bay of Skaill had not even been formed by the sea. Instead there would have been a large area of sand dunes and machair.

The villagers were clever people who built near enough to the sea to collect food and driftwood, but not too near the sea, which would have made storms very risky.

Why do you think the village was abandoned?
