From the dig, archaeologists know that the villagers ate fish and shellfish. 5000 years ago the sea would have provided variety in their food and because no fish hooks have been found archaeologists think fish traps might have been used.
We also know they ate lots of meat from sheep, cattle and pigs.
There was egg shell in the midden, evidence that they collected eggs from birds’ nests, as there certainly weren’t any chickens in Orkney 5000 years ago.
