When my sister and I were young we used to spend the whole of the summer holidays at my Auntie and Uncles house on a croft in Linshader in the district of Uig in Lewis and is about 22 miles from Stornoway. In those days when there was only single track roads and passing places it seemed to take forever to get there.
We used to take the cows out to grazing in the mornings and collect them for milking in the evening, help to churn the butter and watch Auntie pat it into shape.
During the day we would play up the hills at the back of the house and help feed the calves!
Highlight of the week would be going in the rowing boat with our Uncle over to the post office in Callanish. For some reason or other on a sunday I always used to be starving at teatime...Only happened on a Sunday!
Another thing that sticks in my mind is when Uncle would "take the Books", in other words read from the bible and pray and we all had to kneel at a chair in prayer ( sometimes the dog would start howling and we would have a fir of the giggles)
Happy days
