During the war I worked for the Department of Transport and was billeted in Leamington Spa, in England. At that time in the area were always stationed lots of American soldiers, and we had little dances in the canteen for various soldiers and airmen to give them a bit of R and R.
I met an American soldier at one of these dances called Bill Richards and started dating him. My friend Alice had just got married back in Grantown on Spey and soon after I received a funny letter from her. We had had a discussion a long time before about what names we would give our children and I had picked Richard as a boys name. She however, had just become pregnant and liked the name too, and she reckoned that, if I married Bill, there was no way I would call a child Richard Richards so it would be alright. The problem never arose as he was soon moved to a different barracks and we gradually lost touch with each other.
