Bomb Damage

I recall quite a lot of the damage in Glasgow after the 13th March 1941 blitz. Especially the bridge across the Kelvin, just by the art galleries, and on the other side of the road a church which was completely gutted. In Hillhead, near the BBC, was a block of flats and I will always recall the doll's house effect with a three floor high wall missing. The furniture was still in place and there were pictures hanging on the wall. A pink bedspread is still in my memory!

The 13th of March 1941 was my brother David's 3rd birthday. We lived at 1 Morris Place, Glasgow, overlooking the People's Palace and had to spend the night in the air raid shelter in the basement of our flats as several bombs were dropped on Glasgow Green and the roof of our house was damaged. There was a big crater left in the Green by one of the bombs. My grandfather Dr David McKail was in charge of the first aid post in Greenhead Street that night and attended to the injured. Next day we went to school but were sent home as it had been turned into another first aid post. We filled our schoolbags with shrapnel and wore our gas masks on our way home. Shortly afterwards my grandfather rented a house for us in Millport where we remained until 1944 and where food rationing was unheard of.

I lived in Yoker and the docks on the river Clyde were bombed out of existance we were allin our lobbie on when a german bomber was shot down with all of its unexploded bombs on board the plane landed on top of an air raid shelter in the dockyard at yoker and many of the dockers were killed our house shook and i thought it would tumble over we could not breathe from the blast.
