I was 9 when the 1939/45 war broke out. I saw a German aircraft drop bombs into the harbour of refuge, early on in the war. Next the Academy was bombed twice and we had to have lessons in remote halls and even the museum.
There were tragic events too, I saw a hurircane fighter clip a wing in low flying training and the poor South African pilot was killed. It came home to me then how terrible war could be.
German casualities were landed after some action at sea and two that were buried in the churchyard were hit by a german bomb dropped into the churchyard, uncovering their resting place. War was terrible and has left me with both sad and uplifting memories of this time.
My pals and I were keen collectors of shrapnel, aircraft perspex pieces, and even a Spitfire joy stick. The best part I remember is not having to go to school and play football with my pals when the school was being repaired.
