Imagine going to school and THEN having a shower! That’s what happened to some children in city schools in Scotland.

At the beginning of the 60s some people living in tenements did not have access to baths and had to share toilets with other families out on the landing. Systems called ‘mobile shower units’ were taken round schools and a harsh pink disinfectant called carbolic soap was handed out. You then had to scrub yourself clean from a weekly build up of germs and dirt!

Children were given free glass bottles of milk at playtime as part of a plan to improve nutrition. In winter the milk might be frozen and in summer it might be lumpy and more like cream; it was only during the 60s that plastic bottles and cartons for milk became available.
