The 1960s was a time when people raised their voices. There were demonstrations all over the world about many different things. Many people began for the very first time to take notice of what was happening around them and tried to make a change by speaking out.

People in Scotland took to the streets just like the rest of the world.
They led peaceful protests against world-wide events, like the Vietnam war in the late 60s. But there was protest about problems that were closer to home, too.
In the early sixties the United States Navy set up a nuclear base in Holy Loch, near Dunoon. This led to many demonstrations in the area. Locals, other Scots and groups like the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) all attended peaceful protests.
Often, music played a big part in demonstrations. Everyone would sing together to raise spirits and get their message across.
But it wasn't just the big issues which encouraged people to speak out. People protested about all sorts of things - pay and working conditions, rising rent costs and job losses were just some of the things people in Scotland spoke out about.
