Culloden, 1745. The government armies have chased you back into the Highlands.
There is only one more battle to be fought. But when do you fight it? You decide!
Lord George Murray, Jacobite Army General
The enemy camp is only 12 miles away. Let's go right NOW! If we attack them at night we stand more chance of success. Our men haven't eaten in days. If we wait till tomorrow they will be much weaker. Let's march through the night and attack them!
John O'Sullivan, Jacobite Army Officer
The men are tired and very hungry. They need rest. I think they need to rest and then we fight fresh tomorrow. A 12 mile march tonight would be stupid. Half the men are missing anyway – they gone to find something to eat so they don't starve. I say we wait here and fight tomorrow!
James MacDonald, Jacobite Soldier
I've never been so cold or hungry in my life. I haven't had a meal in days. I can't remember the last time I slept in a bed! The men have had enough. We marched all the way to Derby only to turn and march back. I've heard talk of us marching through the night to Nairn. That's 12 miles away! We're exhausted. I just want to eat and sleep. I want to go home.
Letter from a British Army Soldier
Dear Molly, We have the rebels on the run now! Our new general, the Duke of Cumberland is a great man. He's taught us new ways of fighting these Highlanders. We all feel a lot more confident in battle these days. As I write it is the Duke's birthday and he has given us cheese, bread, meat and wine! We're well looked after and we're ready to fight tomorrow. I can't see how we will fail. See you soon, Callum.
