The Tolbooth The Tolbooth
The burgh court and jail are in the tolbooth. The burgh council sits here. The council is in charge of law and order. It is made up of magistrates, who are elected from members of the craft and merchant guilds. Merchants and craftsmen are the most powerful people in the town. They run the town and protect their own wealth and power.

The Mercat Cross
The Puggy The Mercat Cross
&middot The stone unicorn at the top of the mercat cross in Stirling is known as the Puggy.
&middot Does your nearest mercat cross have an animal perched on the top?
&middot The mercat cross is the place to come if you want to catch up on news, find out who's in trouble with the law and, of course, there's the weekly mercat. Here you can buy and sell your farm goods, like oats and eggs.
&middot Meat and fish are sold at a separate market called the Fleshmercat.
&middot The town tavern was often situated near the mercat cross.
