The council is in charge of law and order. It is made up of magistrates, who are elected from members of the craft and merchant guilds. Merchants and craftsmen are the most powerful people in the town. They run the town and protect their own wealth and power. Midden Rubbish from houses is dumped in the streets. Large middens of rubbish build up. This is very unhygienic and causes illnesses. Here you can buy and sell your farm goods, like oats and eggs. &middot Meat and fish are sold at a separate market called the Fleshmercat. &middot The town tavern was often situated near the mercat cross.
