· The Protestant church encourages schools to open in every burgh.
· Boys attend school but girls help their mothers at home.

The Bible
· The Bible is the first book in Scotland to be printed in English. In the past it was printed only in Latin. Ordinary people are encouraged to read and understand the Bible, and English, for the first time.
· John Knox, the Protestant minister and reformer, does not want Scotland to be Roman Catholic or to have a Roman Catholic Queen like Mary, Queen of Scots.

Religious Ornaments
· Protestants believe that churches should not be full of statues and rich decoration. Many churches have been stripped of their riches. The word 'Protestant' comes from the word to protest. Protestants have been protesting against the old Roman Catholic church. Protestants think that the Roman Catholic church has become more interested in making money than religion.

The Kirk
· Protestants want to reform or change religion, and the people's way of life. The Protestant church thinks that all Scots should become members of the new Protestant church. It believes that the church should look after the poor, sick and elderly and have the power to punish people for bad behaviour. It also thinks that all boys should go to school and that school should be free to boys from poorer families.
