Brochan | Seanair > MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2007 Hi! Tha sinn air tilleadh gu Loch Abar! I spent the day touring around Glencoe and learning about a really terrible piece of Scottish history. It was called the Massacre of Glencoe. Over 70 MacDonalds were killed because they weren’t quick enough swearing loyalty to King William. They were killed by soldiers, basically just to teach a lesson. What makes even worse is that the soldiers were guests in the homes of the MacDonalds at the time, and they just murdered them in their homes! A large number of women and children died because they had nowhere to go, after their homes were burnt! It really shows how cruel and ruthless the people in charge were! I’m not usually interested in history, but this had a bit of a ‘Braveheart’ feel to it. I’m glad I went along, and found out about a bit of Scottish history that many people might not know about. Anyway, that’s enough of this brain work. Time to see what new songs there are to download! Loads of Gaelic culture and stuff all over the place, which is pretty cool. The piece of Gaelic culture which interests me the most is the shinty/hurling international match! Shinty is the traditional sport of the Highlands, and hurling is a very similar sport from Ireland. Every year, a game is played between Scotland and Ireland, using rules taken from both games! It’s a really physical game, with a huge pitch! It’s about 30m longer than a football pitch. They both use sticks to control a ball, and you have to try and score goals. A shinty stick is called a caman. I think I’ll have to give it a go myself some time. I like the idea of playing buckshee forward (it’s also called half-forward, but I reckon buckshee sounds cooler!), and launching the attack, or maybe full forward, and hammering home the goals! Anyway, this year’s shinty/hurling match is tomorrow! We’ll have the chance to see the very best players in the world! It’s going to be great! Amazing how quickly a month goes by when you’re busy, and this is our second time here too! We spent a lot of time at the Mòd, and saw loads of Gaelic culture, with music and singing and all sorts. It was pretty cool. We also climbed Ben Nevis again. It was much easier for all of us this time round than it was back in February. A year of activity really helps to improve your fitness! Even Morag wasn’t in such a state as she was only 8 months ago! We also went to a pretty cool place called Knoydart, which you can’t reach via the roads. I’m not sure I’d want to live in such a remote place, but it’s definitely a nice place to spend the day! I think that’s it for Lochaber! Onwards to another new place next month! Tìoraidh!
