A set of bone needles from the Cave of Courbet in the Aveyron Valley
2/2
A set of bone needles from the Cave of Courbet in the Aveyron Valley, near Toulouse, France. These needles are over 13,000 years old. More than 800 needles were found at the site and emphasise the importance of needle manufacture and the production of thread from animal hair, sinew and gut used for making clothes, blankets, bags, tents, and nets. These were base camp tasks and probably a full time occupation for the women. Without this essential activity, life at the end of the last Ice Age would have been tough.
