Is it time to reassess IVF treatment?
A paper in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology this month argues that we should be doing more to reduce the number of multiple pregnancies resulting from IVF which is costing the NHS millions.
It argues we should only allow women having IVF to have a single embryo transferred instead of the current practice of two. The money saved in neonatal costs would mean an additional 10,000 cycles of IVF could be funded by the NHS every year.
Woman's Hour looks at the cost of multiple pregnancies and asks how single embryo transfer would work in practice when some couples having IVF seem to find the idea of 'two for the price of one' increasingly attractive.
