Model for “wraparound” childcare?
Whether or not you welcome the government’s plans for “wraparound” childcare, you may be interested in hearing the experiences of Kibbutniks in Israel who were brought up in strict communal childcare arrangements.
Kibbutz members organized their society such that children were taken care of around the clock by caretakers so that women could work alongside men on the land. Children were housed in separate accommodation according to their age. From newborns to teenagers the children of the kibbutz would sleep, bathe play eat and study away from their parents.
By the 1990s all kibbutzim had abandoned this practice of collective childcare and children were returned to the homes of their parents. From Israel, Karen Dingoor Strauss examines the effects of the Kibbutz approach to communal childcare.
