Spanish domestic violence 12 Dec 2005
On the increase

Earlier this year Amnesty International called for the Spanish authorities to act to protect women against domestic violence. They said that the number of women killed by their partner or former partner has continued to increase. In 2004, 72 women died despite the fact that seven of them had been granted protection orders.

But in 2001 the Spanish government introduced new laws in an attempt to deal with the problem and set up a national police unit to try to protect those women who have been issued with a court protection order.

Lesley Hilton went to Madrid to find out what impact the scheme has had on tackling domestic violence.
