Traditional vs. progressive?
This week representatives of a group called Sisters in Islam, a women’s advocacy group based in Malaysia, are visiting Britain to meet Muslim women in this country. The group has been building links with Muslim women around the world. According to prevalent stereotypes, a Muslim woman who wears a headscarf is traditional.
But many commentators, including representatives from Sisters in Islam, are now arguing that the terms ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ do not adequately describe Muslim women’s lives, and that the reality is more complex. So to what extent can Islamic laws and texts be re-read in the light of modern feminism? What actually counts as ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’?
