The new Evitas 10 Nov 2005
Has there been a change in the political landscape of Latin America?

Recent elections in Argentina and forthcoming elections in neighbouring Chile have thrown the spotlight on high profile female candidates.

In the case of Argentina, Christina Fernández de Kirchner, wife of the current president of Argentina, swept into the senate seat for Buenos Aires with a political campaign that often compared her to a former first lady of Argentina - Eva Peron.

Next door in Chile, single mother Michelle Bachelet is widely tipped to become the country's first female premier in the presidential elections in December. So do these women represent a sea change in the male dominated political landscape of Latin America?
