  Elizabeth Blackwell 10 Nov 2005
World's first female doctor

Elizabeth Blackwell overcame numerous personal, financial, and professional hurdles to qualify and practice as a doctor in the mid 19th century.

But despite being a female pioneer she took a dim view of feminism and actively prevented her adopted daughter from pursuing an independent life and career. Jane finds out more about this complex woman and the huge impact she had on the medical profession.

The Excellent Doctor Blackwell: The Life of the First Woman Physician by Julia Boyd. Published by Sutton. ISBN 0-7509-4140-5
