Are the police failing victims of child abuse?
On August 16th last year, Duncan Fairhurst walked into Grantham Police station in Lincolnshire to report the 10 years of rape and sexual abuse he had endured at the hands of his father. In September 2005 his father Clifford Fairhurst was jailed for 11.5 years after being found guilty of 14 counts of rape and sexual assault of Duncan and another young boy. Duncan Fairhurst has waived his right to anonymity because he believes that Lincolnshire Police mishandled the case.
Duncan joins Martha to talk about his experience. She also discusses the state of the police child protection services with the Head of the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse Unit and a Chief Advocate of a support group for child sex abuse victims.
Has police child protection improved at all since the errors that blighted the investigation of the abuse of Victoria Climbie? And how are adults treated when they report that they were sexually abused as children?
