Reducing deaths during childbirth in Nigeria
It may be Africa 's most densely populated nation and the largest oil producer but in reality most people in Nigeria live in poverty with two thirds of the population living on less than $1 a day
The woman's lot in Nigeria is even more desperate. According to the Department for International Development, women are twice as likely as men to live in poverty. One of the biggest worries women face is giving birth. Around half a million women a year die as a result of pregnancy or childbirth.
But in some of the most remote parts of Nigerian that trend is being reversed. The training of local women to act as midwives in some of the villages in Northern Nigeria has helped half the number of deaths during childbirth.
