  The burqa 19 Oct 2005

Dutch ban proposal

The Dutch immigration minister has stirred up controversy with her proposal to ban the burqa in public places.

The traditional Islamic garment covers women from head to toe leaving only a strip for the eyes and has been cited as a potential security threat by the Minister. But is the West's suspicion or fear of the burqa more deep-rooted than that? And how are feminists, Muslim and non Muslim, likely to react to a potential ban?

Jenni is joined by Fareena Alam, Editor of Q News and Baria Alamuddin, Foreign Editor of Al Hayat.
