Fastest growing sport for women in the UK

Visit any US sporting event and, regardless of whether it's being held in a tiny high-school gym or a 100,000-seater stadium, you can normally rely on one thing: cheerleaders.

Their perfect smiles and never-say- die exuberance are a cliché that's as all-American as apple pie or Disney World.

Cheerleaders have been in the UK for about 20 years. At first they existed to cheer a team and gee up the crowd into some sort of frenzy, but cheerleading has become a self-contained sport, and is, in fact, the fastest growing sport for women in this country.

Next weekend a regional event at Wembley just for Southern England, sees just under a thousand young women competing. Sue Elliot-Nicholls went to speak to Cheyne Pride, a cheerleading coach based in North London. But first she spoke to the Queen Mary Angels about their experiences as cheerleaders...
