On her early life, and her memories of food in India

Madhur Jaffrey is regarded as one of the leading writers on Indian food. Born in Delhi, she has written more than fifteen best-selling cookery books and her 1982 BBC TV series made her a household name.

In the week Madhur Jaffrey publishes her childhood memoirs, Martha Kearney talks to her about her early life growing up in India as part of a large extended family and her vivid memories of the food she experienced at picnics, banquets, festivals and everyday mealtimes.
