  Making friends 14 September 2005
Are women better friends than men?

New research published in the States apparently shows that whereas men react to stress with the "fight or flight" instinct, women's response is to "tend and befriend" ie they gather their friends round them and nurture their relationships. This produces the hormone oxytocin which reduces the negative effects of stress on the body - hypertension, heart disease, mental health problems, high cholesterol.

Jenni is joined by Mike Gayle, author of Brand New Friend and Emily Dubberley, author of the forthcoming book You must Be My Best Friend…Because I Hate You!- Friendship and How to Survive It .  They discuss whether female friends are better for you? And what differences are there between male and female friendships?

Brand New Friend by Mike Gayle, published by Hodder and Stoughton - ISBN 0-340-82539-1

You Must Be My Best Friend... Because I Hate You!: Friendship and How to Survive It by Emily Dubberley, published by Fusion Press - ISBN: 1904132766
