Women in Afghan democracy 16 Sep 2005
After the Taliban

As Afghanistan prepares to vote on Sunday for its first parliament in more than three decades, Woman's Hour examines the role of women in the democratic process in Afghanistan.

It's less than five years since the end of Taliban rule which crushed the rights of women denying them access to education and health care - but now many women are running for parliament against a continuing background of violent intimidation and cultural disapproval. We hear some of their stories and look at their chances of success.

Guests: Najiba Kasraee, BBC World Service Afghanistan, and Dr Rosalind Marsden, British Ambassador in Kabul
