Is boarding school really the answer?
According to the Fostering Network, the UK has a shortage of 10,000 foster carers.
It is estimated that there are about 60,000 children in this country who are 'looked after'. They might be in a home, in a foster family or with a family member who's not a parent. Half of those in care get no GCSEs at all, only 2% go on to university, and 1 in 8 move foster home more than twice a year.
Recently it emerged that the government is considering increasing the number of vulnerable children, including looked-after children, who are placed in boarding schools.
Will this help solve the crisis in foster care and give the children the benefits of a good education? Or will boarding schools find it difficult to meet the high emotional needs of children from complex home backgrounds?
