Is there a stigma attached?
Why are men reluctant to go into childcare and what do we think of men who do?
Around 160,000 new childcare workers will be needed if the government is to realise its wrap around childcare provision. Currently in Britain only 2% of childcare workers are men and many local authorities are already actively trying to attract them to the profession.
Jenni talks to Charlie Owen at the Thomas Coran research unit, London University's Institute of Education and Thom Crabbe, head of projects at Daycare Trust to find out what is being done to encourage men, why they are reluctant to go into childcare and is there still a stigma attached to men who do take up the challenge.
Also Clare Jenkins went to the Sheffield Children's Centre, which is the only childcare establishment in Britain where half the 75 staff members are men, to find out how it works.
