What can be done to stop them?
Every year eight million women suffer pregnancy-related complications and more than half a million die.
In some developing countries this means that 1 woman in 16 may die in childbirth. We ask why this is happening, and what is being done about it.
Martha is joined by Gwyneth Lewis, who works on maternal deaths for the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation, and Nono Simelela, who has worked as a gynaeocologist in South Africa for 18 years.
