The Mediterranean diet 10 June 2005
Have the health benefits of the diet been over-stated?

It was in the 1950's that an American physiologist looked into the long life expectancy of the people of Southern Europe and coined the term the "Mediterranean Diet".

Over fifty years later Mediterranean food has never been so dominant, in the pages of celebrity cook books, magazines, in gastro pubs and top class restaurants. But with childhood obesity rates in some Mediterranean countries now catching up with America, have the health benefits of the diet been over-stated?

The queen of Mediterranean cuisine, Claudia Roden, and the Guardian's Matthew Fort explore the complexities of the food that nourished the beginnings of Western civilisation.
