 Since Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman into space in 1963, only 42 other women have followed her
With just 10% of all astronauts being women, this has lead to very little information being collected about the way that they function in space.
The European Space Agency is currently conducting trials on women and the effects on weightlessness to help redress this imbalance.
Jenni finds out from volunteer Marjo Jarvinen and project manager Dr Peter Jost how the bed rest study is going.
