The first ever World Championship event held in Britain
Surfing originated as a sport of King's and Queen's as the elite caught the waves off Hawaii and Polynesia. Banned by the missionaries as a form of devil worship, surfing was famously revived this century, and given its enduring hippy image.
In the last year surfing has undergone another huge change - the number of women taking up the sport has doubled to nearly a hundred thousand.
This weekend, for the first time Britain will host an event on the women's world championship tour. But what is the appeal of life in a wet suit off Britain's icy coastal waters?
The Women's World Championship Tour is taking place at Perranporth beach, Cornwall, from 21until 27 May
