 Mosques are traditionally run by men for men, with women following prayers in a separate space
But that tradition was swept to one side last weekend in New York, when Amina Wadud made the headlines and became the first woman to lead Muslim prayers for both men and women.
And there was controversy this week in the Netherlands too, when a women’s mosque opened its doors, for one night only.
